One of the most overlooked internal control issues in small to mid-size companies is the use of spreadsheets in the day-to-day accounting process. Spreadsheets are great for analysis, modeling, forecasting, etc., but should not be used in lieu of controlled interfaces between production systems and general ledger. Yet many companies continue to do so on a regular basis.

While there has been much noise lately about the future of Sarbanes-Oxley, rest assured there will continue to be some level of regulation related to internal controls and corporate governance.  However, it would be great to find some relief from the onerous requirements of Section 404 today.
